Not necessarily. If you’ve how much savings you’ll need in order to retire comfortably, and the number is dauntingly, impossibly large, you’re not alone.
Many, perhaps most, Americans have that reaction. Don’t let it scare you away from retirement planning or use it as an excuse to do nothing. There are several reasons to believe you’ll reach your retirement goals after all. First, keep in mind that you don’t actually need to save that much at all. You need to save only enough that, when invested in the financial markets over time, will grow into the amount you need. And if you still have some working years left before retirement, you very well may be underestimating the extremely powerful effect of compounding. Second, if you’ve used a “rule of thumb” approach to estimate your retirement needs, remember that those rules almost always build in assumptions for the – and your situation may not match those assumptions.
To get a better estimate of much you may really need, try. Calculator: Many methods of projecting your retirement needs also assume that you’ll need to maintain your current level of expenses or something close to it. (Many experts use 70% to 80%.) That’s all fine if you’re trying to make some conservative back-of-the-envelope projections. But again, there’s little reason to think that approach will capture the nuances of your particular situation.
If you are currently, for your parents, or that will eventually either be paid off or unnecessarily large, for example, it’s very possible that your expenses will decline dramatically in retirement. Can help, too. But the problem is that you don’t know if you’ll have the interest or energy to work at an advanced age – or if you’ll have health problems that prevent it. You also may have a tough time finding an employer who wants to hire you in your later years for the amount of money you want to earn.

That is the age at which both women and men are allowed to claim, and sure enough, 40.8 percent of the women who were newly awarded Social Security in 2014 were aged 62. Some 65 percent were below their full retirement age, typically 66. And just 2.8 percent of the women were 70 or older, the age at which they receive their maximum Social Security retirement benefits, according to Social Security Administration data. Often, both women and men reflexively claim Social Security when they retire. 'People don't realize the options out there. They think, 'Oh, I retired, I need to file for Social Security,' said Shawn Britt, director of the advanced consulting group for Nationwide Insurance.
And women at an average age of 62, a figure that has barely budged in a decade, according to a study by the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. 'Earlier drivers of working longer are no longer having a substantial impact,' the study concluded. Unfortunately, that creates a major problem for older women. The Social Security Administration reduces benefits for people who claim before their, so by filing when she is first eligible, a woman is setting herself up for a Social Security benefit by as much as 30 percent for the rest of her life. It would be one thing if women generally had other significant sources of income in retirement.
But according to Britt, women are five times as likely as men to live only on Social Security. Women who are counting on from Social Security also see their payments diminished if they file before full retirement age. At full retirement age, a woman would be eligible for either her own full benefit or half of her spouse's, whichever is larger. But if she files at 62, she would only be eligible for her reduced benefit or as little as 32.5 percent of her partner's. Their early claiming of benefits may be one reason why nearly 2.9 million women over 65 live in, more than double the 1.3 million men in poverty, according to the National Women's Law Center. (Not only do men tend to earn more over their lifetimes, they also retire at age 64, on average, the Center for Retirement Research found.).
But there is an easy way for women to boost their income in later life. A woman who on collecting Social Security after her full retirement age will receive delayed retirement credits that will boost her benefit as much as 8 percent for every year she waits until age 70. In other words, a woman whose full retirement age is 66 would receive a benefit reduced by as much as 30 percent if she retired at 62, but if she waited until age 70, it could increase by as much as 32 percent. 'Current research suggests that waiting to claim Social Security can substantially increase expected lifetime benefits and reduce the risk of outliving their wealth.'
All in all, delaying a Social Security claim from age 62 to age 70 can increase the value of the benefit by as much as 76 percent, according to by David Laster and Anil Suri of Merrill Lynch. 'For a retiree with pressing financial needs or a short life expectancy, it may be best to claim benefits as soon as possible. But for many others, current research suggests that waiting to claim Social Security can substantially increase expected lifetime benefits and reduce the risk of outliving their wealth,' they.
That is particularly true in today's low interest rate environment. The 'return' on waiting to claim Social Security is well above the yield on a low-risk asset like a bond, for example.
People may also believe that if they hold off on receiving Social Security income until 70, the cost of delaying will outweigh the higher income they start receiving at age 70 for years, perhaps until they reach 85 or 90, Britt said. But in reality, she said, the break-even point is closer to age 80. That is well below the of age 86.6 that the Social Security Administration calculates for women turning 65 now. In addition to delaying their initial Social Security claims, women have other options for boosting their Social Security income.

Joan Entmacher, vice president for family economic security at the National Women's Law Center, pointed out that married women with higher earning spouses can have the spouses file for Social Security at full retirement age and or defer, their own receipt of benefits. The woman can then begin claiming a spousal benefit but continue working, allowing her own Social Security benefit to grow until she reaches age 70. The spouse's benefit will also continue growing until age 70. If they both claim benefits at that point, they maximize their Social Security income. 'At 70, you've got a substantially higher benefit that will continue for the rest of your life,' she said.

Britt pointed out that women who have been divorced after at least 10 years of marriage may have another way to boost their Social Security benefit: by using their ex-spouse's benefit. 'I can't tell you how many divorced women don't realize they may be able to collect off their ex-husband's Social Security,' Britt said. 'The Social Security office can even tell them what the amount is. They don't even have to go to him.'
Women divorced after 10 or more years are eligible for a benefit equal to half of the ex-spouse's, so if that exceeds what she stands to receive on her own, she can claim that. Social Security officials are now allowed to advise beneficiaries on the best strategy for claiming benefits, but a financial adviser can help, too. For women who do not have advisers, local libraries sometimes offer workshops and seminars. AARP also provides a that can help you decide how to claim. Anyone can benefit from sorting out how to claim Social Security, but women will find it especially valuable, Britt said. 'Learning about Social Security is even more important for women than men because they live longer,' she said, noting that for women who are 65 today, one in four will reach 90. 'A woman's biggest concern is outliving her income sources,' she said.

Questions such as, I can't believe you're still single. Have you tried volunteering? What about that online dating thing?
'Generally, single women have never felt as free to travel alone as single men, due to the personal safety risks involved for them,' explains Kayte Williams, holidays manager at travelsupermarket.com.
And, worse, the implication that, for single women, the holidays are not something to be enjoyed but an ordeal to be survived. Essayist Shani Silver has had it, people. She wrote a piece for Refinery29 called 'Dear Single Women: This Holiday Season We Fight Back.' She offers advice for how single women can make it through the holiday season with their happiness and self-esteem intact. And she's with us on the line now from Brooklyn, N.Y. Shani, welcome. Thanks so much for joining us.
SHANI SILVER: Thank you for having me. MARTIN: And so you were telling me earlier - and, actually, you said in the piece that you've written a few of those how to survive essays yourself over the years. SILVER: I have. And, you know, initially, I think that they were a big help to me and hopefully help to people that were reading them as well.
But I think, after living in that mindset for a while, it's sort of worn out. And I think that there's way more to do over the holiday season as a single woman than simply brace yourself and survive the questions and the overly personal exposure of your private life that really doesn't happen once you become a partnered person. MARTIN: Enough with the surviving, right? We're going for more than that, right? SILVER: Exactly.
MARTIN: But all the questions you've described sound really terrible. And, of course, you know, I'm wracking my mental Rolodex to see if I've actually said any of those things, and I'm really hoping I haven't. And if I did. SILVER: (Laughter). MARTIN: I apologize.
But what would you identify as, like, the worst? SILVER: I think the go-to question for most people that you haven't seen in a while is, so are you seeing anybody kind of question. That is just the immediate go-to that comes up every time.
That one is the one that I have the hardest time pushing past because it's a very private thing to ask someone. And it's also not necessarily going to be the answer that the person who's asking the question is hoping to hear.
But let's talk now about your strategy. Your essay is basically a call to arms, people.
It's, like, fight back this year. What do you suggest women do?
SILVER: I think changing the conversation is really what I was trying to do with this piece and sort of use similar tactics that have been used on us in the past. And I give a couple of examples about, you know, common questions and common phrases that come at us and maybe what we could say instead. And, usually, that strategy in my mind - and, well, there is a lot of humor baked into this - but that strategy in my mind is sort of feeding that guilt back to the person who's been previously serving it to you. MARTIN: So how do you steer the guilt into there to make it really effective? SILVER: Oh, I love that part.
MARTIN: How do you amp the guilt up? Yeah (laughter). MARTIN: I would say letting people know that they're definitely not being helpful even though that - they think they are being helpful. So turning the question around and letting them know, you know, the suggestions you're giving me, the questions you're asking me - I know you really mean well, but what you're actually doing is, you know, hurting my feelings (laughter), actually, and a little more detail letting them know that I've tried everything you're suggesting.
I've tried more than everything you're suggesting. And if you really want to help, like, let's get into it. Let's really discuss how you can help me. Unless, of course, you don't actually want to help me. And that's where the amazing guilt part comes in as you get to say to them, do you not want to help?
Am I not, you know, somebody that you want to help out? Like, is this not a discussion you really wanted to get into at the table with the whole family watching - that kind of thing. MARTIN: Oh, ouch. Yeah, that's pretty good. All right, let's turn up the burn a little bit. You know, Uncle Greg, when you - this is really horrible. Did somebody actually say this to you when you refer to my eggs as a product with an expiration date?
Has somebody said to you,. SILVER: Not directly to me. But it is an anecdote with some truth in it. I'll say that. MARTIN: Oh, my gosh. Well, so when you refer to my eggs as a product with an expiration date, that's an incredibly offensive way of letting me and all the women seated at this table know that you think women have nothing more to offer the world than childbearing. So how do we amp up the burn on this one?
SILVER: The way that I would approach that is just really being direct and saying, you know, tomorrow morning, I'm going to be cooking breakfast for the entire family, and I do hope that there's nothing wrong with your eggs. MARTIN: (Laughter).
SILVER.That sort of moment. A little bit of honesty, a little bit of feeding them with their own ingredients - that sort of message. And this one, I think, is probably a classic. Probably a lot of people have said this. And, again, if I have said this to anybody, I apologize - asking how dating is going. And you have.
MARTIN.A lot of suggestions for really bringing the honesty to this. So how is dating going?
What do you say? SILVER: Sure. So the realities of how dating is going is that what's actually happening most of the time is you're enduring a lot of ghosting. And if you've been married for the last 10 to 15 years, you won't know what ghosting is, mercifully. But ghosting is when you have met someone, you've gone on a date with someone, or you've gone on a good, you know, 20 dates with someone. And then, out of nowhere, they sort of vanish into thin air as if you've made them up in your mind. And that can sort of drive you a little bit insane.
And that question and telling the truth about that question is feeding that back to the person that's inquiring about it and making it a little bit more real for them and a little bit more honest for them. So what's happening is I'm going out on dates, and then I'm never hearing from people again. MARTIN: And you finish with, but I'm so glad you asked about this publicly because another blow to my self-esteem was just what the doctor ordered. Did I answer your question? SILVER: Yes - at the table.
MARTIN: At the table. Thanks so much. Here's one of my favorites from back when I was single. I was going on a business trip and having somebody - a man - who'd sit next to me and say, oh, you know, are you married, or are you a single gal? And I'm, like, yeah. And he's, like, well, pretty busy with your career, huh? SILVER: Oh, yeah.
